Political Science (Bachelor's Degree Subject)Contemporary, multifaceted, and exciting

Political science is a rich and particularly topical area of study which is closely linked to our everyday lives. Political decisions shape how we live together as a society, defining our freedom to act, our duties and our rights. Accordingly, to study political science is to investigate these concepts in depth, and ask questions such as: How do generally binding rules come into being, and how are they enforced? How do political systems and institutions operate? How can we explain political behavior? How are international relations shaped? Why does war and conflict occur, and how is it resolved?

This makes for a multifaceted and exciting study program. Students at the bachelor level will first develop a strong foundation in political science theories and methods, which are then built upon as they learn additional skills that equip them to analyze political structures and processes.

Focal areas of teaching and research

Political science at the University of Basel places a strong emphasis on international relations, as well as comparative studies between and within political systems. As students progress through the bachelor’s program, they also have the opportunity to specialize in one of these two areas. In combination with the module «Extension Political Science», the chosen specialization allows students to tailor their studies more individually and to develop clear thematic focuses. Other key areas of academic focus are democracy, political representation, inequality, climate policy, and peace and conflict studies.

The program’s specialized approach enables diverse teaching and research collaborations with other humanities and social sciences departments. The thematic focus complements and expands upon courses offered by other institutes and faculties. The geographical and cultural aspects of courses offered by the Center for African Studies, the Institute for European Global Studies and the departments of Middle Eastern Studies, Eastern European Studies and Literary Studies make them an ideal complement to the political science program.

The bachelor’s program offers a solid theoretical, methodological and thematic academic foundation. It comprises three core branches of political science: comparative politics, international relations, and political theory. Students will become familiar with different government systems and political actors, and will grapple with the factors that shape decision-making processes, as well as conflict and cooperation between political actors on the regional, national, and international level. The track modules – «Specialization in Comparative Politics» and «Specialization in International Relations» – as well as the module «Extension Political Science» allow students to tailor the course of their studies to suit their chosen specialty. In parallel, students acquire core academic skills, including scientific research techniques, the development of research designs, and the application of appropriate quantitative and qualitative methods of data collection and analysis. The interdisciplinary nature of the social sciences is also explicitly taken into account: through the module «Extension Social Sciences», the study of political science is complemented by related disciplines.

This program can only be started in the fall semester.

One ECTS credit point corresponds to approximately 30 hours of work.

Subject combination

The diverse understanding of theories and methods in political science provides an ideal basis for interdisciplinary studies and allows for many beneficial combinations with other subjects. In addition to subjects from the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, a second bachelor's degree subject can also be an extra-faculty subject.

The 30 CP for the free electives can be gained in courses of your choice (please check entry requirements of the respective courses).

Bachelor’s admission requirements

The Student Administration Office at the University of Basel is responsible for admitting students to bachelor’s programs in the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences. This is based on the admission regulations of the President’s Office:

  • with Swiss educational qualifications,
  • foreign educational qualifications, or
  • as a visiting student (not working toward a degree at the University of Basel)

Holders of a Swiss federal Maturität certificate will be admitted to all bachelor’s degree programs.

If you have any further questions, please consult the information provided here.

Registration dates

Students must register for their bachelor’s or master’s degree program within a specified timeframe – even in cases of delayed registration.

Information events

The University of Basel organizes regular information events for bachelor’s and master’s programs. Details can be found on the events page of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences.

Some subject areas also offer their own separate information or welcome events. Please consult the page for the relevant subject area for event dates and locations.

Deadlines and dates for the Bachelor's studies

Students who have earned 60 CP in the subject to be examined or 120 CP in the degree program and have completed the seminar papers that count towards the degree in the subject to be examined or in the degree program may register for the Bachelor's examination. Proof is provided by submitting the module assignment.

Only one subject per session can now be examined. This means that the two Bachelor's examinations can be spread over two sessions (note: only for subjects - it is not possible to separate the two examinations for degree programs).

BA examinations: Due to the free availability of AI text generators (such as ChatGPT), the Faculty of Phil.-Hist. has decided to adapt the way in which the BA examination is conducted. This adjustment is intended to ensure that students are able to do their own work. From spring semester 2023, the BA examinations will once again be written in the university rooms under supervision. These will be digital "bring-your-own-device" examinations. The examination dates remain unchanged.

Please note the updated information sheet on the procedure for BA examinations and the new registration form (subject, degree program). If you have any questions, please contact the Student Administration.

Continuing on to a master’s degree

A bachelor's degree qualifies graduates for entry to subsequent master’s level programs. Dependent on the subject options chosen at the bachelor level, it may permit entry to a master's in a different subject area.

Career opportunities

Upon successful completion of the degree in political science, graduates can pursue careers in a wide range of professional fields. These include positions in non-governmental organizations (NGOs), international organizations (such as the United Nations), and research units within private-sector companies (for example, banks and insurance firms), as well as careers in politics, public administration, business, and the media. The program provides an excellent foundation for positions that require independent, methodologically sound, and analytical work, such as research associates, consultants, analysts, public relations officers, or project managers.
