Tobias Hagmann is a Research Associate at the Institute of Political Science and a Senior Program Officer at the Swiss Peace Foundation (swisspeace). He holds a PhD in Public Administration from the University of Lausanne and the Institut de hautes études en administration publique (IDHEAP). Between 2012 and 2021 he was Associate professor in development studies and comparative politics at Roskilde University in Denmark. He held academic appointments and was a visiting scholar at the Department of Geography at the University of Zurich, the Woodrow Wilson Center for International Scholars (Washington DC), the University of California at Berkeley and the Danish Institute for International Studies (DIIS) in Copenhagen. His main research interests are comparative conflict studies, the sociology of the state and politics in the Horn of Africa. His analysis and commentary have appeared in, among other, the New York Times, Neue Zürcher Zeitung and International Crisis Group.
